Engaging students in the classroom
Welcome to Module 5!
In this module, we’ll focus on student engagement in EMI and EAP lessons. In the context of EMI and EAP, student engagement refers to how interested students appear to be during lessons, how actively and enthusiastically they participate in activities, such as class discussions, group work, or even how much effort they appear to put into completing homework tasks or assignments.
A wide variety of factors can affect how engaged students are in particular courses, and engagement levels can often vary from lesson to lesson. This means that what increases one student’s engagement levels in a particular lesson will not necessarily increase the engagement levels of all their classmates, nor will it necessarily help maintain that particular student’s engagement levels across all lessons.
Completing this module will help you to:
- gain a deeper understanding of factors related to student engagement in the classroom, such as motivation, foreign language anxiety, and learner autonomy
- develop your knowledge of various strategies which can be used to engage students in EMI and EAP classrooms
- make principled decisions in selecting and adapting strategies to engage students as appropriate to your teaching context

- provide a brief background of theories of motivation in the EMI/EAP context.
- discuss how learner autonomy and foreign language anxiety might affect student engagement levels.
Dr. Syariful Muttaqin from Universitas Brawijaya, Indonesia, who will:

- discuss a selection of teaching approaches and learning activities which can increase student engagement levels.
- introduce digital and online tools which can increase student engagement levels.
A selection of Indonesian lecturers and students who will:
- use their own personal experience of teaching/learning in an EMI/EAP setting to provide valuable insights into how student engagement levels can be maintained and even increased.
Glossary of key terms
Before continuing with the module, you may find it useful to familiarise yourself with the following key terms.
Engagement | The level of involvement, curiosity, interest in learning; this can be behavioural (how we act, e.g., verbal responses), emotional, cognitive and social |
Emotional engagement | This refers to how students feel about their learning, for example how happy, or anxious |
Cognitive engagement | This refers to the mental effort and involvement in learning |
Social engagement | This relates also to affect and the quality and types of relationships and interactions/participation |
Active learning | An approach that emphasises student involvement, e.g. by responding to questions, discussions, problem solving to increase engagement and deeper learning (more in-depth and involving higher order thinking skills) |
